Don Camillo and Peppone
Once upon a time, there was a small town ... this is how one of the most famous Don Camillo and Peppone films begins, which was filmed at Brescello. All of the films of Giovannino Guareschi’s popular tales were shot on the plains, not far from Reggio Emilia, in the little villages with their arcades, squares, churches and bars: a "world in miniature". There is a Don Camillo and Peppone Museum at Brescello, housed in an austere building not far from Piazza Maggiore. The building was once a Benedictine convent and was turned into the museum in 1989 by a group of Don Camillo fans. Mementos and memories of the film are on display in the museum: from Fernandel’s bicycle to Peppone’s motorbike ... there is also a collection of videotapes, books and food. The town is home to many of the other sites that were seen in the films (the great bell, the square and the church of course, with its steeple and crucifix).
