Leave the motorway at the Reggio Emilia exit with its three beautiful bridges designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, and follow the directions for the Cerreto Pass (brown signs). At the roundabout, continue looking for signs to Passo del Cerreto, then turn right onto the ring road, towards Montecchio – Parma. Keep driving in the same direction, until you arrive at the next roundabout and then take the right turning for Montecchio. After 1 Km, continue towards Montecchio (blue signpost) - Cerreto pass (brown signpost) at the roundabout. Continue following the same signpost at the next roundabouts until you arrive at a large roundabout with a water tower in the middle. Continue looking out for directions to the
Cerreto Pass - SS63; if you are in any doubt as to the direction to take, you can also follow the signs indicating Castelnovo Monti – La Spezia. You will go past
Rivalta,
Puianello ,
Vezzano sul Crostolo, Casina and Felina. You can continue on the SS63 right up to the Cerreto Pass. But when you reach
Castelnovo Monti there is an alternative route: keep on the SS63 as you enter the town. When you see the brown signpost on the left indicating the
Pietra di Bismantova (about one Km after the white signpost indicating you have arrived at the town, near the Bar Turista café. Turn left for the car park (called Piazzale Dante, the starting point for the path up to the top of the Pietra) and continue following the brown signposts. The scenery is quite breathtaking, with the magnificent Pietra di Bismantova in the foreground. There is a nice restaurant a few metres along the path and a few metres down from the car park you will find a
country hotel. Make your way back to the junction by backtracking on the same road (GPS DATA: N44 25 39.4 - E10 24 32.4). Turn left towards
Bondolo. You can also look out for the brown signposts indicating the ""
Triassic Rocks"". The road goes down the hill and crosses the river Secchia with the Rock wall behind you. Turn left immediately after the bridge (GPS DATA: N44 13 28.1 - E10 31 03.8) following the brown signposts for
Fonti di Poiano (Poiano Springs) (3 Km away from this junction). The road runs alongside the river, blending in perfectly with its surroundings (the road surface is the same colour as the rocks on the riverbed); the area has been redeveloped with an eye on eco-friendly issues (there are five information panels about the river along the road, unfortunately only in Italian at the moment, with picnic areas). The road can be dangerous because it is covered with a thin layer of shingles, so drive carefully. Back on the main SS63, turn back at the bridge and follow directions for Villa Minozzo, towards itinerary 2 and rejoin it at Busana or Collagna; otherwise, re-track your journey on this road. You can decide to link up with itinerary n°5 at Collagna (Vallisnera - Lago Calamone, Ramiseto, Gazzolo junction for the Lagastrello Pass or Vetto). Or Valbona - Succiso road for the Lagastrello Pass. On your right, along the SS63, there is the link with itinerary N° 2 signs for Collagna and then signposts immediately afterwards, near the "Dalla Maddalena" café, for Vaglie and Ligonchio. In any case, you continue on the SS63 to the Cerreto Pass until you see the signposts telling you to turn left towards
Cerreto Alpi, one of the most attractive towns in the Apennines. The detour is highly recommended, with a stroll to see the Water Museum (which you may find closed, however). When you arrive at the Cerreto Pass, you should also go have a look at Cerreto Laghi. This small mountain lake is reached by taking a left turn as you drive up the hill; it is also a popular ski resort and has its own ice skating rink, several hotels and restaurants where you can get a taste of the local food.
